Spring Field Trips to Plan for This Year

Spring Field Trips to Plan for This Year

Spring is Field Trip season. Especially for everyone enduring snowy, frozen weather right now the emergence of Spring leaves us desperate to head outside to do something, anything.

With Spring right around the corner and a new semester just beginning, I have been busy brainstorming field trips. Which field trips should we do over (repetition is everything for kids!) and what new places should we go explore?

Spring Field Trip Ideas:

Head outside and explore where you live. If you’re able to, of course plan that amazing road trip or spring escape, but exploring where you live is just as fun and meaningful.

  1. Wildflowers
I’d like to drive out to Anza Borrego this Spring but there are a lot of closer spots to see wildflowers too.

2. Garden Center
Buy seeds and then plant your own garden. There are more gardening unit ideas in this post for younger kids or this one for older kids.

3. Japanese Friendship Garden
We have a beautiful one here in San Diego these beautiful spaces are prevalent around the country. Seeing the Cherry Trees blossom is one of my favorite things about Spring.

4. Go on a New Hike
We have a couple scheduled. I am planning to bring cameras to practice photography as well. You could also learn more about birds in your area (here’s our bird unit). What new trails by your home have you been thinking about trying? Pick a date and go.

    5. Puddle Walk
This is harder to schedule, but one my kids have always loved. It requires a little bit of spontaneity. When you get a good, heavy shower, go hunt out the biggest puddles in your rain boots. Read more tips in this post.

    6. Sledding
This is especially a SoCal one, but when it rains here it is time to head to the mountains to go sledding and early Spring is often the best time to do this. Late snowfalls can hit other places too so even though you may be snow and wintered out, try to see a good snowfall as one last change to sled.

    7. Berry Picking
My dad grew up on a farm so pieces of that life were always present in my childhood. A big one was annual trips to pick various things on farms outside of the city. What’s in season on the farms in your area? Can you go pick blueberries? Strawberries? Avocados? Here are some tips on doing this with young kids from when I took my twin toddlers blueberry picking.
